We started with the goal of improving the health and well-being of our own pets. Now, we hope to use what we have learned to promote nutrition and vitality in pets across the country.

Meet The Owners

Pets are such an integral part of our lives and our families, and so their overall care – including their nutrition – is paramount to their health and longevity. We are Anoosh and Amanda Rakhshandeh, the local owners of Pet Wants Lubbock, and we believe in Pet Wants’ products and the positive impact our food, treats and other supplies can have on the welfare of your pets.

Pet Wants’ specially-crafted, private-label pet food formulas are made in small batches with fresh, natural ingredients, enriched with vitamins and minerals for a complete and balanced diet in every bite. We have multiple blends of dog and cat food formulas, as well as healing salve, calming balm, anti-itch spray, paw wax and more. Pet Wants Lubbock is a mobile business that offers free, personal delivery in Lubbock and some surrounding areas.

We are the proud parents of one daughter and two fur-sons – a 13-year-old golden retriever, Jasper, and an 11-year-old Maine Coon, named Bafi. Anoosh raised our two boys, but they quickly adopted Amanda once she joined the family. Jasper has a heart of gold – even giving a bunny a bath after catching it – and Bafi, who is an active, talkative cat, keeps us laughing every day.

Amanda grew up in the Texas Panhandle with dogs and cats as constant companions. After moving away for college, where she earned a PhD studying viruses, she then researched the ability of botanical extracts to prevent viral infection before returning back home. She currently teaches Anatomy & Physiology and enjoys helping her college students improve their lives through education. Anoosh has a PhD in animal nutrition and has been serving the animal community for the last decade. During that time, he has dedicated his life to improving animal welfare through science-based nutrition. Anoosh has made several important scientific discoveries in the field of animal nutrition, he has taught animal nutrition to countless students at various institutions of higher education and he’s written or contributed to more than 50 scientific papers, articles, abstracts and book chapters.

Food can have a huge impact on the health, well-being and longevity of a pet, and Anoosh has used his science training to successfully monitor and adjust the nutritional value and food intake of our two pets since they were young. At a recent check-up, the vet told us that the blood work of our 13-year-old golden retriever looked like that of a dog half his age. We’re excited to share what we know – and what Pet Wants knows – about using nutrition to keep pets healthy and to serve other pet lovers in our community.

Caring for Our Furry Family

When you think of your pet, what brings you joy? Bright eyes? Shiny, soft coat? Tail wagging? Snuggle time? All of these things, and more, are reflective of our pets’ health. It all starts with fresh, nutritious ingredients. Food is medicine and like us, what our pets eat impacts their lives. When store shelves are filled with bags that all basically look the same, it can be confusing trying to decide what food is best. We often rely on marketing campaigns to help inform us. But how are you to trust the quality of the ingredients beyond the assumption that higher prices equate to better food? That a playful puppy in a commercial is really eating fresh, nutrient-rich kibble?

What's Wrong with Name Brand Foods?

Most commercial pet food is manufactured in mass quantities and sent to a series of distribution warehouses before finally making it onto the shelf at your local store. There it sits…possibly for up to 6-8 months before it’s purchased for consumption. Because pet food loses its nutritional value over time, pets can ultimately end up eating a diet that’s low in nutrition and can ultimately lead to unnecessary sickness, disease and even a shortened life.

How Pet Wants Got Started

As pet parents know, a pet’s diet is very important. Pet Wants was created in 2010 after the owner of Pet Wants noticed some serious health issues with her beloved pets. Problems began to appear and quickly worsened. Many unsuccessful trips to the veterinarian’s office and several thousands of dollars later, the owner decided to take matters into her own hands. She discovered the problem was the low nutritional value of the food she was feeding her pets. In simple terms, the pets weren’t getting enough of the right nutrients necessary for a healthy life. As a pet parent who cared deeply about her pet’s welfare, she felt terrible — like she had let down a family member. She was shocked to learn that the nationally recognized premium brand food she trusted for her pets lost most of its nutritional value from sitting too long in warehouses, and on store shelves….she decided there had to be a better way.
